Representatives from Associated British Ports (ABP) and the Project Integra partnership* welcomed the Rt  Honourable Michael Meacher, MP, Minister of State for the Environment, to Southampton on Tuesday, 25 March, when he officially opened a new 2 million glass-reprocessing facility built at ABP s Port of Southampton. The first shipment of processed glass from the Southampton site was handled earlier this month with a Copy Writing Services single ship transporting the equivalent of 45 articulated lorry loads of glass to ABP s Port of Goole on the Humber Estuary.

The development of the facility was spearheaded by Project Integra, which worked jointly with the Midland Glass Processing Company (MGPC) one of the UK s leading glass-recycling companies. Completing the green cycle, ABP and port-based stevedores, Solent Stevedores, secured a 800,000 Freight Facilities Grant (FFG) from the UK Government, which part funded the development.

The plant, which was jointly constructed by ABP and MGPC, uses state-of-the-art technology including colour-sorting equipment imported from America. The technology used at the site allows the opportunity to guarantee all of the glass currently put in bottle banks by local residents is recycled in the most economically and environmentally-friendly way. By locating the reprocessing facility at ABP s Port of Southampton, it enables the glass to be transported by coaster vessels as opposed to by road, and opens up the opportunity to explore overseas markets.

Hams Hall Railfreight Terminal, operated by ABP Connect, the value-added services division of Associated British Ports (ABP), is to undergo major expansion works, following a 1.2 million grant from the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA). The grant was awarded on the back of a new, daily intermodal service between Hams Hall and Scotland – which will significantly reduce the amount of goods transported by road – and will see the Birmingham-based terminal greatly improved, with new tracks, additional handling capacity including three new reachstackers, enhanced IT systems, and increased storage capacity.
